SUMMARY:The Poetic Image: Borrowing Devices from Poetry to Make Lyrical Photographs with Montserrat Andrée Carty (Online Learning - Six Sessions)
DESCRIPTION:Online Learning\nPhotography and Poetry have long been linked. While they are quite distinct art forms\, there is a lot to be learned from the traditions of poetry that can help us in our photographic work.  \n\nIn this workshop\, we will look at how we can borrow poetic devices such as metaphor\, parallelism and symbolism to create a visual language. Over the course of six weeks\, students will be given prompts\, brief lectures\, optional readings\, in-class critique\, along with examples of photographers making poetic images\, writers whose work is full of imagery\, and artists whose work encompasses both. Examples will also be given on ways to create images from words (i.e. erasure poems\, collage\, etc.) and words from images (i.e. Ekphrasis\, a poem that responds to a piece of art).  \n\nThis class is open to photographers who would like to write poetry (and / or lyrical prose) but also to photographers whose goals are to make lyrical photographs and simply be inspired by writing. \n\n&nbsp\;\n\nMontserrat Andrée Carty is a Spanish-American writer\, photographer\, and the interviews editor for Hunger Mountain. She also hosts the podcast Musings of the Artist. Her writing and / or photographs have been published in journals including Longreads\, Bellingham Review\, The Sun and Poetry Northwest. She holds a MFA from Vermont College of Fine Arts.\n\n\n&nbsp\;\n\n&nbsp\;
