SUMMARY:Intermediate Studio Lighting with Hugh Kretschmer (In-Person Learning - Six Sessions)
DESCRIPTION:In-Person Learning\nDesigned as a follow-up to Introduction to Studio Lighting\, this six-session\, in-person workshop offers students the opportunity to deepen their technical skills and creative vision within the controlled environment of the studio. Through hands-on exercises and instructor-led demonstrations\, participants will move beyond foundational lighting setups to explore more nuanced\, intentional uses of light in portraiture\, still life\, and product photography.\nStudents will refine their understanding of light quality\, direction\, and contrast while experimenting with multi-light configurations\, advanced modifiers\, and lighting tools such as grids\, snoots\, flags\, and reflectors. Emphasis will be placed on shaping mood and visual impact through thoughtful lighting design—learning how to guide the viewer’s eye\, emphasize texture\, create separation\, and evoke emotion through light.\nEach session combines structured instruction with shooting time\, allowing students to apply new concepts immediately and build confidence through guided practice. As they grow more fluent in lighting language and control\, students will begin developing a more personal style and approach to studio-based image-making.\nThis is an intermediate-level course intended for those with prior experience in studio lighting. Students must be comfortable working with strobes and familiar with basic lighting equipment. A DSLR or mirrorless camera with a hot shoe or sync connection is required.\n&nbsp\;\nHugh Kretschmer set his sights on a career in photography at the age of 13\, when his father taught him how to print his very first photograph in the family darkroom. Since then\, he has never looked back\, receiving a BFA from Art Center College of Design\, and launching his career as a photo-illustrator in the editorial and advertising arenas. His fanciful yet provocative photographs balance between art and commerce\, and have brought him critical acclaim through numerous national and international awards\, and have been the subject of many articles and industry blog posts\, most recently in Juxtapoz and Huffington Post\, Italy. His work is now represented by Fathom Gallery in Los Angeles and Fotografenwerk\, Dusseldorf\, while on the commercial side has garnered him a long client list that includes Old Spice\, Huggies\, Honda\, Toyota\, Kohler\, Evian\, New York Times Magazine\, Time\, Vanity Fair\, and Oprah Magazine. Kretschmer is currently an adjunct professor and part-time instructor at both Santa Monica College and UCLA.\nView instructor profile here.\n\n&nbsp\;
