SUMMARY:Creating Intimate Portraits with Josefina Fernandaz Moran (Online Learning - Six sessions)
DESCRIPTION:Online Learning\nPhotographers often make portraits of both strangers and those close to them—but creating an intimate portrait requires something deeper: a genuine moment of connection between photographer and subject.\n\nIn this six-session online course\, we will explore how to cultivate that connection and create portraits that move beyond surface representation. Through guided assignments\, group discussion\, and constructive critique\, students will examine how trust\, vulnerability\, and presence shape the photographic encounter.\n\nTogether\, we will consider approaches to working with both familiar and unfamiliar subjects\, developing strategies for building rapport and creating a collaborative space in front of the camera. Emphasis will be placed on intention\, communication\, and ethical engagement as tools for making more meaningful work. We will also study the work of influential photographers including Larry Sultan\, Sally Mann\, Nan Goldin\, Rineke Dijkstra\, and Dana Lixenberg\, among others\, to understand how each navigates connection and authenticity in their portraiture.\n\nBy the end of the course\, students will have developed a small body of work that reflects a deeper engagement with their subjects and a more intentional approach to portrait-making.\n\nJosefina Fernandez Moran is a photographer and educator from Buenos Aires\, currently based in New York City. She is a faculty member at the International Center of Photography (ICP)\, where she was selected to participate in the 2023 Faculty Exhibition\, on view through 2025.\n\nHer photographic series Adolescent Girls was exhibited at The Clemente Soto Vélez Cultural &amp\; Educational Center in 2022. She is a recipient of the En Foco Fellowship (2020)\, and her work has been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions\, including the Consulate General of Argentina in New York (2021)\, the Latin American Fine Art Competition at Agora Gallery (2018)\, and Umbrella Arts (2016 and 2018). She was also named among the selected winners of The Photo Review in both 2019 and 2020.\n\nIn addition to her role at ICP\, Josefina has taught Visual Storytelling in partnership with the Museum of the Moving Image as part of the Su-Casa Grant program. Between 2013 and 2018\, she collaborated with photographer Harvey Stein to lead photography workshops in Argentina during Carnaval. She began her teaching career in Buenos Aires\, where she taught photography prior to relocating to the U.S.\n\nBefore transitioning into photography\, Josefina had a successful career as a makeup artist. Her credits include working with artist Cindy Sherman on the film Office Killer\, as well as collaborating with several notable directors and production companies.\n\nView instructor profile here.
