DESCRIPTION:Hybrid Learning\nTimeline is a real-time exploration of our changing world through the photographic lens—a living\, evolving archive built by documentarians\, photojournalists\, and street photographers capturing what is happening right now in the places they call home\, documenting a nation in flux and creating a visual record for next generations.\n\nLearn more here.\n\nCohort - Los Angeles\, CA with Marissa Roth\n\nGuided by award-winning photojournalist and documentary photographer Marissa Roth\, the Los Angeles cohort will engage with the layered\, sprawling\, and ever-evolving fabric of L.A.—a city where countless cultures intersect and narratives unfold across vast geography.\n This cohort will focus on the moments that define the lives of individuals and communities in Southern California\, from neighborhood micro-communities to the larger forces shaping the city’s identity.\n With Roth's careful mentorship and her nuanced approach to storytelling\, participants will develop long form projects and contribute images that reflect the diverse realities of Los Angeles\, expanding the Timeline archive with work rooted in empathy\, curiosity\, and deep engagement with the urban landscape and the people who define it.\nThe first meeting will be held via Zoom on Saturday\, January 16\, 10 am -12:30pm PST. It will be an introductory session\, during which Marissa will discuss his work and the participants will share theirs.  The group will then meet for an in-person photowalk on Saturday\, January 23\, 1 pm - 3 pm\, starting at LACP in downtown Los Angeles.  Subsequent sessions will be scheduled by Marissa and the group.\n\n\n&amp;nbsp\;\n\nBorn and raised in Los Angeles\, Marissa Roth is a photojournalist\, fine art and documentary photographer. Her editorial photo assignments for prestigious publications including The New York Times\, have taken her around the world. She was part of the Los Angeles Times staff that won a Pulitzer Prize for Best Spot News\, for its coverage of the 1992 Los Angeles riots.\n\nRoth’s global documentary project\, One Person Crying: Women and War\, which spans 40-years of her photography and addresses how women have been directly impacted by war and conflict is a traveling exhibition\, with a forthcoming book.\n\nHer published books include\, Infinite Light: A Photographic Meditation on Tibet\, with a foreword by His Holiness the Dalai Lama\; Burning Heart: A Portrait of The Philippines\; and The Crossing\, a poetic photographic study of the Atlantic Ocean. Cantata: In Isolation\, a photographic memoire about her pandemic experience\, is also a forthcoming book.\n\nWitness to Truth\, a portrait project of Holocaust survivors commissioned by The Museum of Tolerance/Simon Wiesenthal Center in Los Angeles\, contains 104 of her photographs and is on permanent exhibition at the museum.\n\nRoth’s work has been widely exhibited\, and is in both public and private collections. In addition\, she is a curator\, lecturer and writer. She is a Fellow at the Royal Geographical Society in London\, and is also an advisor and Chair of the Jury Committee for Earth Photo\, a joint photography competition between the Royal Geographical Society and Forestry England.\n\nView instructor profile here.
