SUMMARY:Light Is the Subject: Photographing Los Angeles with Marissa Roth (Hybrid Learning - Two Sessions)
DESCRIPTION:Hybrid Learning\nLos Angeles is a city transformed by light. From the warm glow of late afternoon to the luminous colors of twilight\, the changing light can reveal unexpected beauty\, drama\, and atmosphere in even the most familiar places.\n\nIn this immersive hybrid workshop\, acclaimed photographer Marissa Roth will lead participants into the streets of Downtown Los Angeles to explore the city through the lens of its extraordinary natural light. Beginning with a brief orientation at LACP\, the group will head into the field for an afternoon of photographing as the quality\, direction\, and color of light continually shift toward dusk.\n\nParticipants will explore how to see and respond to changing light\, while considering composition\, timing\, color\, shadow\, and atmosphere. The workshop encourages photographers to slow down\, observe closely\, and discover how light itself can become the central subject of an image.\n\nThe field session will be followed by an online gathering to review and discuss participants’ photographs. Through group conversation and feedback\, students will reflect on their experience in the field and consider how an awareness of light can transform their photographic practice.\n\n&nbsp\;\n\nBorn and raised in Los Angeles\, Marissa Roth is a photojournalist\, fine art and documentary photographer. Her editorial photo assignments for prestigious publications including The New York Times\, have taken her around the world. She was part of the Los Angeles Times staff that won a Pulitzer Prize for Best Spot News\, for its coverage of the 1992 Los Angeles riots.\n\nRoth’s global documentary project\, One Person Crying: Women and War\, which spans 40-years of her photography and addresses how women have been directly impacted by war and conflict is a traveling exhibition\, with a forthcoming book.\n\nHer published books include\, Infinite Light: A Photographic Meditation on Tibet\, with a foreword by His Holiness the Dalai Lama\; Burning Heart: A Portrait of The Philippines\; and The Crossing\, a poetic photographic study of the Atlantic Ocean. Cantata: In Isolation\, a photographic memoire about her pandemic experience\, is also a forthcoming book.\n\nWitness to Truth\, a portrait project of Holocaust survivors commissioned by The Museum of Tolerance/Simon Wiesenthal Center in Los Angeles\, contains 104 of her photographs and is on permanent exhibition at the museum.\n\nRoth’s work has been widely exhibited\, and is in both public and private collections. In addition\, she is a curator\, lecturer and writer. She is a Fellow at the Royal Geographical Society in London\, and is also an advisor and Chair of the Jury Committee for Earth Photo\, a joint photography competition between the Royal Geographical Society and Forestry England.\n\nView instructor profile here.
