SUMMARY:Finding the Form: Editing\, Sequencing\, and Building a Photobook with Tim Carpenter (Online Learning - Four Sessions)
DESCRIPTION:Online Learning\nA compelling photobook is more than a collection of photographs—it is an experience shaped by rhythm\, relationships\, pacing\, and the ideas that emerge when images are brought together. But how do you move from a strong body of work to a book with its own visual language\, narrative\, and sense of purpose.\n\nIn this four-session online workshop with photographer and educator Tim Carpenter\, participants will explore a range of approaches to editing\, sequencing\, and structuring a photobook. Through presentations\, close readings of published books\, practical exercises\, and group discussions of work-in-progress\, we will consider how the order of images\, the interplay of visual and conceptual connections\, and the use of repetition\, interruption\, and pacing can shape a reader’s experience.\n\nRather than prescribing a single method\, the workshop offers tools and strategies for discovering the form that best serves each individual project. Participants will be encouraged to question their assumptions\, experiment with alternative sequences\, and develop a clearer understanding of the relationship between their photographs and the book they are producing.\n\nParticipants should arrive at the first session with an early-draft PDF of their project\, edited and sequenced for group discussion.\n\n&nbsp\;\n\n\n\nTim Carpenter is a photographer\, writer\, and educator who works in Brooklyn and central Illinois. He is the author of several photobooks\, among them Rehearsals for departure\; Little\; A month of Sundays\; Christmas Day\, Bucks Pond Road\; Local objects\; township\; Bement grain\; Still feel gone\; The king of the birds\; and A house and a tree. Tim received an MFA in Photography from the Hartford Art School in 2012. He is a faculty member of the Penumbra Foundation Long Term Photobook Program and serves as a mentor in the Image Threads Mentorship Program. Tim’s book-length essay To photograph is to learn how to die was published by The Ice Plant in Fall 2022.\n\nView instructor profile here.\n\n&nbsp\;
