SUMMARY:Boots on the Ground: Street Photography Basics with Dan Balilty (In-Person Learning - Seven Sessions)
DESCRIPTION:In-Person Learning\nThis seven-session class will introduce students to street photography. We'll study historic and contemporary street shooters and make our own candid photographs in a variety of Los Angeles locations. We'll meet once a week on Monday evenings\, for lecture and critique\, and once a week on Saturdays for a hands-on practice session.\n\nTopics covered in class include what is good content and composition\, how to capture a mood or a moment\, and how to see light. Additional topics will include strategies for photographing candidly\; the power of the decisive moment\; how to approach strangers\, and techniques for street portraiture. We'll discuss equipment choices and lens selection\, as well as the laws and ethics of shooting on the street\, and best practices for brave but careful shooting.\n\nSaturday field trips will be determined in-class\, both times and locations\, considering festivals\, events\, and parades. \n\n[caption id="attachment_36447" align="aligncenter" width="741"] (Photography by Daniel Chechik)[/caption]\n\nDan Balilty (danbalilty.com)  (b. 1979) is a photographer\, cinematographer\, and music producer born in Jerusalem and based in Los Angeles. He began his professional photography career in 1999 as a photojournalist for a local news agency in Jerusalem. Since then\, he has worked as a photographer for Yedioth Ahronoth (2001-2005) a leading Israeli daily newspaper\, The Independent (2005-2007)\, The Associated Press (2007-2017)\, and The New York Times (2016 - 2022).\n\nIn 2019\, Dan filmed as a Videographer 2 episodes of the six-part documentary Netflix series\, “Immigration Nation”\, which was released in 2020. Today\, Dan splits his time between Los Angeles and Tel Aviv and is a regular contributor to the New York Times. Since 2017\, his work has concentrated mainly on daily and political life in Israel and the West Bank and combines both stills and video to tell a visual story.\n\nIn addition to the publications above\, his work has also been featured in publications around the world\, including Reuters\, Time\, Newsweek\, The Guardian\, Agence France Presse\, and Polka Magazine.
