DESCRIPTION:In recognition of Pride Month\, join us for a panel discussion and conversation on Art as Activism within the LGBTQIA+ community.\n\nThis timely event addresses the anti-LGBTQIA+/transgender legislation that is happening across the country and throughout the globe. Moderator Kurt Simonson leads the discussion with shared works from photographic artists Jeanette Spicer and Michael Young and how they use their art for change.\n\nModerated by Kurt Simonson\n\n\nWith Panelists: Jeanette Spicer and Michael Young\n\n&nbsp\;\n\nJeanette Spicer received her MFA from Parsons The New School in 2013 and has been awarded a number of residencies locally and internationally. Spicer’s first monograph\, “Sea(see)” was published in 2018 by Kris Graves Projects. She has shown her work globally\, and has had her photographs published in the New York Times\, New York Magazine\, New Yorker\, and Dazed Magazine. Spicer has taught at a number of Art Institutions such as The School of Visual Art\, The International Center of Photography and at Colleges such as Pratt\, and The College of New Jersey.\n\n&nbsp\;\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMichael Young is a lens-based artist whose work deals with masculinity\, personal identity\, and memory. He is a Top 10 winner of LensCulture Critics’ Choice 2022\, a Top 50 artist in Photolucida’s Critical Mass 2021\, and a winner of Feature Shoot’s 2021 Emerging Photography Award. Recently he was shortlisted and highly commended for the Belfast Photo Festival 2023.\n\nYoung’s work has been published in Musée Magazine\, Fisheye Magazine\, and in two issues of Der Greif. Young is also in the process of creating a publication with Skylark Editions. Online features\, articles\, interviews\, and shows include LensCulture\, Humble Arts Foundation\, Fisheye Magazine\, Fraction Magazine\, Feature Shoot\, The Guardian\, Float\, and F-Stop Magazine.\n\nModerated By:\n\n\n Kurt Simonson is an artist/educator whose work explores the longings and tensions that surround our ideas of home\, community\, and identity. Whether connecting the myth and memory of his upbringing in Minnesota or taking intimate portraits of his closest friends\, questions about family\, story\, and belonging remain at the heart of his curiosity.\nKurt's work is regularly exhibited and published throughout the country and internationally\, from the San Diego Museum of Art to the Benaki Museum in Athens\, Greece. He has received awards from Center Santa Fe and Photolucida’s Critical Mass\, and in 2015 Kurt was named one of LensCulture’s 50 Emerging Talents. His first monograph\, Northwoods Journals\, was published in 2015 by Flash Powder Projects.\nKurt lives and works in Long Beach\, California\, where you can probably find him eating breakfast or roaming around Disneyland between his classes at Scripps College\, Loyola Marymount University\, and Long Beach City College.
