THE LOS ANGELES CENTER OF PHOTOGRAPHY is proud to announce a special photography program designed specifically for the Boys & Girls Clubs in LA County. This program is the very reason that we became a non-profit six years ago after 14 years as The Julia Dean Photo Workshops. We wanted to create photography programs for underserved kids. Our dream is working.

THIS IS THE STORY.

In 2015, LACP’s executive director, Julia Dean, began volunteering every Wednesday after school for two years at the Boyle Heights (Variety) Boys & Girls Club. Her dream was to design the perfect curriculum for an after-school program, then implement it into as many Boys & Girls Clubs as possible. Due to the generosity of a board member, we were able to hire a successful grant writer, who got us a grant from an anonymous family foundation big enough to launch our photography program into 10 Boys & Girls Clubs (out of 26 in LA County).

During the initial year of this program, LACP provides cameras and accessories, a computer with Photoshop and Lightroom, and a digital projector. This equipment is given to the Clubs if they decide to continue the program into perpetuity. (They agreed to keep the program when they sent in their application.)

In the first year, LACP also pays for the teachers’ salaries. In subsequent years, LACP will help the Clubs find good teachers, but it is the Clubs’ responsibility to raise money to pay the teacher or any additional equipment needed.

This is one of the reasons we are fundraising for this program.

The other reason is because there are more Clubs in which to share our program. Right now there are 10 Clubs involved, with 10 kids in each. We’re teaching 100 kids photography this year! Let’s do it again next year too.

The curriculum, designed by LACP’s executive director Julia Dean, is set up for the kids to have a great time while learning photography.

The class meets once a week after school for the first three weeks of the month. During the “classroom” sessions, the kids shoot a specific assignment, critique each other’s photos from the week before, and end with inspiration from something the teacher shows them.

During the last week of the month, the group meets on a Saturday for a three-hour shoot somewhere in LA County, such as Downtown Los Angeles, Hollywood Blvd., Venice Beach, and Santa Monica Pier.
