Distance Learning Class via Zoom

This Basic Photography class was originally designed for the classroom, but due to the current health crisis, it has been redesigned as an “on-line” version, and added to LACP’s curriculum. All students will be instructed on how to use LACP’s (easy) on-line system prior to the start of the class.

This on-line class will “meet” Monday through Friday, April 13-17 for 3-1/2 hours per day, though with a two-hour break in between to do the daily assignment. (See below for the schedule.)

During the lectures, the students will learn about DSLR, Mirrorless and Rangefinder cameras, and about basic camera operation, including f-stop, shutter speed and ISO. Discussions include composition and light, how to get the background in or out of focus, how to stop or blur motion, why to use one ISO over another, when to use a tripod, and how to use the camera’s light meter to provide the best exposure. Other topics covered include using the appropriate lens for a desired effect (the difference between a prime lens and a zoom lens), how to hold the focus on a subject if changing camera positions (exploring auto focus modes and manual focus), and how to properly hold the camera.

Digital camera technology will be covered thoroughly, such as how to adjust the camera’s white balance, how to view and delete images, when to shoot RAW versus JPEG, how to choose the appropriate memory card, and how to transfer the image from the camera to a computer. The goal is to provide each participant with the technical information needed to operate his or her camera properly and with the confidence and ability to shoot in all exposure modes: Program, Aperture Priority, Shutter Speed Priority and Manual.

There will also be daily assignments and critiques.

The daily schedule: (A detailed outline will be given to those who sign up)

11:00 am – 1:00 pm: Lecture, Inspiration, Critique

1:00 – 3:00 pm: Students do assignment on their own (and have lunch)

A link for the Zoom class meeting will be emailed to the attendees about one week prior to the start date. Please read the instructions included in the email. If you have additional questions please contact Kevin Weinstein or Janis McGavin at
