Learn how to make powerful, memorable travel images, become more comfortable approaching and photographing people, and feel more confident navigating unfamiliar cultures. Enrich your travel experiences by connecting with others through your camera and use it as a key into exploring other peoples’ lives.
Join world-renowned travel and National Geographic photographer Alison Wright in this unique workshop as she spends the weekend with students photographing ethnically diverse areas in and around Los Angeles. Possible areas include Chinatown, Little Tokyo, Arts District, Korean Town and Venice Beach, among others.
On Saturday, after a Friday evening group discussion and review, Alison will discuss how to create a sense of place which includes paying careful attention to food, culture, people and the environment. The afternoon will be spent photographing in some of the areas noted above and will include people, markets, food, bar scene, sporting events and relevant cultural festivities. Participants will learn how to effectively capture the late afternoon/evening light for maximum impact. The day concludes with the class gathering for an authentic dinner in the surrounding area.
The workshop continues on Sunday morning, exploring and shooting in yet another diverse/eclectic area. Alison will reveal how shooting with a sense of passion and purpose propels her photographs beyond the ordinary. After lunch, the class will reconvene at the Los Angeles Center of Photography, spending the rest of the afternoon editing the work and putting together a strong travel story. A slideshow presentation of the all participants’ photographs concludes the workshop.
Please bring 5-10 images that best represent your work on Friday evening. Participants should be able and willing to immerse themselves in diverse communities and explore the unknown. Please be prepared for possible early morning/late evening shoots.
