About

Online Learning

In this dynamic and reflective online course, fine art photographer Tara Sellios invites students to reimagine still life as a powerful mode of creative expression. Far beyond traditional arrangements, this class explores the genre as a poetic and symbolic language—one that draws from personal emotion, material exploration, and the rich history of light and composition.

Over six weekly sessions, students will gain both conceptual and technical skills to create visually compelling, emotionally resonant still life photographs. Tara will guide participants through preliminary sketching and planning, sourcing and arranging materials, building tableaus, and working with both natural and artificial light to develop mood and meaning. Through thoughtful assignments, group discussion, and visual inspiration—including references to classical painting and contemporary photography—students will develop their own unique approach to still life as narrative.

Students will need to supply a camera body of their choice, as well as objects for their still lifes and tools such as glue, wire, and other materials. Drawing supplies—such as paper, pencils, pens, paint, or whatever they choose—are also encouraged to support the creative process.

This course is ideal for photographers and artists seeking to deepen their visual storytelling, experiment with creative control, and cultivate a more intentional studio practice. Beginners and experienced image-makers alike will find space to play, reflect, and refine their voice.

Join us for a transformative experience in still life photography—where light, object, and meaning converge.

Tara Sellios is a multidisciplinary artist working mainly in large format photography and also in drawing, sculpture and installation.   Since receiving her BFA in photography/art history in 2010, she has exhibited both locally and nationally. Recent solo exhibitions include her first solo museum show, Ask Now the Beasts  at Fitchburg Art Museum (Fitchburg, MA), Infernalis at Gallery Kayafas (Boston, MA), Sinuous at C. Grimaldis Gallery (Baltimore, MD) and Testimony at Blue Sky Gallery (Portland, OR). Her work is part of several permanent collections, including The Museum of Fine Arts Boston, the Museum of Photographic Art @ San Diego Museum of Art, The Danforth Museum and the RISD Museum. Her visceral, highly detailed photographs are intensely planned and process oriented, often using organic matter like animal skeletons and real, dried insects.  Living and working in her South Boston studio, she uses an 8×10 view camera to photograph these  arrangements which result in dramatic, painterly still-life photographs wrought with sensuality, lightness and darkness, and religious symbolism.
