In-Person Learning at LACP

This six-month class is intended to teach students how to shoot candidly on the street, not only from practical experience, but also from studying historic and contemporary street photographers. We will meet once a month on Monday evenings, for lecture and critique, and once a month on Saturdays for a shooting session.

Topics covered in class include: what is good content and composition, how to capture a mood or a moment, and how to see light. Additional topics covered included the laws and ethics of shooting on the street, how to shoot candidly, how to capture the “decisive moment,” how to anticipate the future, how to approach people, how to shoot from the hip, equipment choices, lens selection, seeing in 3D, seeing in black & white, and how to be brave, but careful.

Many of the shooting sessions will take place in downtown Los Angeles. We will shoot on Broadway, the Toy District, the Fashion District, the Flower District, Chinatown, Little Tokyo, the Arts District, on Olvera St., and in Union Station. If it rains, we’ll ride the Metro for a few hours. We’ll also shoot on the Venice Beach Boardwalk and on Hollywood Blvd.

Born in Rochester, NY, the home of Eastman Kodak, Todd Felderstein (www.ToddFelderstein.com) claims that with these roots he was destined for a career in photography and the visual arts. First introduced to the camera at a very young age via the Pentax Spotmatic, Todd continues to shoot professionally (with current equipment!) in tandem with his career as a director in film & theatre. Early successes include the “Anti-Smoking” media campaign for the City of Los Angeles’ that was featured in print and on billboards throughout Southern California and a series on martial artists that was published by Blackbelt Magazine. Clients through the years include PR and advertising agencies, Mattel, the Los Angeles Times and many others. Today, Todd likes to focus his lens on portraits, musicians, commercial and ‘street’ photography, a close relative to his work in documentary filmmaking. Todd also has a wide array of music videos, documentaries, short and long-form motion productions and was recently a finalist in the “Emerging Filmmaker Program” at the Cannes Film Festival. Todd has taught youth programs in photography and filmmaking all over the country, established the youth documentary program at the San Pedro Int. Film Festival, and is the former executive director of The Story Project, a nonprofit whose mission furthers communication skills in at-risk teens through a curriculum rooted in the media arts.

Teaching September 18 and October 16 field sessions:

Rinzi Ruiz (https://www.rinziruizphotography.com/) is a Los Angeles based freelance photographer. His work has been featured in the Los Angeles Times So Cal Moments, the Think Tank Gallery You Are Here Exhibit, at the Hatakeyama Gallery Street Photography Exhibit and his first solo exhibit, Street Zen, at the Perfect Exposure Gallery. His work also includes portraits, landscapes, urban landscapes, events and weddings. He studied fine arts at various community colleges and majored in graphic design and computer animation at Art Institute of Los Angeles. After a year of freelancing he spent 10 years at Technicolor in their Creative Services division starting as a graphic designer and eventually becoming the Manager and Art Director of the Graphics Dept. He then became interested in photography and taught himself how to use the camera. He combined his knowledge of arts and design into his photographic work and has produced a body of work with a style that he has become well known for. He shoots the streets as often as possible and is familiar with the different areas in Downtown Los Angeles. Rinzi’s street photography style combines light and shadows and graphic elements and also to portraits of interesting characters he meets along the way.
