About
“You are a very special person. There is only one like you in the whole world. There’s never been anyone exactly like you before, and there will never be again. Only you.” – Fred Rogers
This webinar will discuss producing images that only YOU can make. Kurt Simonson will guide you in exercises to explore unexpected sources of ideas and discuss ways to walk through the vulnerability and risk involved in making such work. You’ll hear practical examples and stories from his Kurt’s work, as well as insights learned from over twenty years of guiding his students in making personal narrative projects from a place of specificity and originality.
Kurt Simonson is an artist/educator whose work explores the longings and tensions that surround our ideas of home, community, and identity. Whether connecting the myth and memory of his upbringing in Minnesota or taking intimate portraits of his closest friends, questions about family, story, and belonging remain at the heart of his curiosity.
Kurt’s work is regularly exhibited and published throughout the country and internationally, from the San Diego Museum of Art to the Benaki Museum in Athens, Greece. He has received awards from Center Santa Fe and Photolucida’s Critical Mass, and in 2015 Kurt was named one of LensCulture’s 50 Emerging Talents. His first monograph, Northwoods Journals, was published in 2015 by Flash Powder Projects.
Kurt lives and works in Long Beach, California, where you can probably find him eating breakfast or roaming around Disneyland between his classes at Scripps College, Loyola Marymount University, and Long Beach City College.
