Publishing a Photo Book: A Continuation with Harvey Stein (Online Learning – Seven Sessions)

  • June 15, 2022
    9:00 am - 12:00 pm

Online Learning Class via Zoom

This five-month, seven session workshop continues the work accomplished in the initial Publishing A Photography Book class. In that class, each participant presented a long-term project for discussion, editing, sequencing and the items to think about in submitting the project to a publisher. Lectures covered various important aspects of the publishing industry germane to helping participants maximize their approach to publishers. Topics covered included publisher’s criteria for evaluating proposals, what to present to publishers and in what form, negotiating contracts, the use of book agents and marketing people, and issues of advances and royalties.

This class will focus entirely on strengthening the book projects and getting them to publishers. The ultimate goal is to have work accepted by a publisher that has the clout and reach to produce a major book and properly market it. The long duration of the course will give each student the time to finalize and make as strong as possible their work and the presentation of it, thereby increasing the chances of acceptance. Another goal is to insure that everyone is prepared to work intelligently with the publisher once they say yes.

A few guests will discuss their experience and expertise in book making. A final session will be an individual one-hour meeting between the instructor and student to review, summarize and further analyze the project and give advice on future steps.

This course is strictly limited to 12 students.
