Join Jeanine Michna-Bales as she walks you through the creative process of promoting yourself and your work in a way that allows industry professionals to truly understand your artistic practice. You’ll have the opportunity to follow a lecture that includes real-world examples, ask questions, and do a brief strategy exercise to hone your self-promotion message.
After a successful career spanning almost 20 years as a creative in advertising, Jeanine Michna-Bales (http://JMBalesPhotography.com) chose to become a full-time artist working in the medium of photography. Her work explores our fundamentally important relationships – to the land, to other people and to oneself – and how they impact contemporary society. It lives at the intersection of curiosity and knowledge, documentary and fine art, past and present, anthropology and sociology, and environmentalism and activism. Her practice is based on in-depth research – taking into account different viewpoints, causes and effects, political climates – and she often incorporates primary source material into her projects.
Michna-Bales’s work has been exhibited throughout the United States and is currently part of four traveling exhibitions. It is held in the permanent collections of the Library of Congress, Museum of Fine Arts Houston, and The Phillips Collection. Her work has been featured in The New York Times, Smithsonian Magazine and on BBC World News, among others.
Michna-Bales received a 2018 Fellowship from AIRIE (Artist in Residence in the Everglades) and has been named to the Critical Mass Top 50 in both 2014 and 2017. In 2016, she received the Archive of Documentary Arts Collection Award: Documentarians of The American South.
She has published two monographs: the most recent Standing Together: Inez Milholland’s Final Campaign for Women’s Suffrage (2016-2020) was released by MW Editions in May 2021 and Through Darkness to Light: Photographs Along the Underground Railroad (2002-2016) was released in 2017.
An integral part of her artistic practice is promoting dialogue on given topics. She has given artist talks around the country including the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
