Standing with Nature: Personal Vision as a Public Commitment with Arno Rafael Minkkinen (Webinar)
February 18, 2023
10:00 am - 11:30 am
Like most life journeys, we can never be sure just where they will lead, especially at the beginning and if we are open to adventure. Now 53 years later, looking back, at a time before climate change changed everything, I’ve come to realize that my use of my own body to create surreal worlds—as I aim to do to this very day—actually evolved into a kind of memorandum about our place in the only habitat we know, planet earth. Planet home. Thought about that way, what kind of home do we want to preserve for future generations? That such questions and answers on the major issues of our time can be addressed with the press of a shutter makes photography one of the most precious of tools at our disposal.
Arno Rafael Minkkinen (https://www.arnorafaelminkkinen.com/) is a Finnish American photographer and Emeritus Professor of Art at the University of Massachusetts Lowell and Docent at the Aalto University School of Art, Design, and Architecture in Helsinki. Already in 1969—years before the self-portrait genre evolved from Cindy Sherman and Francesca Woodman as it did in the mid-70s—Minkkinen began what would become a personal quest, dedicating over five decades to a single concept, that of the unmanipulated nude self-portrait in communion and counterpoint with nature outdoors and urban settings. Publications and solo and group exhibitions worldwide number in the hundreds. Minkkinen’s writings, teaching stints, academic and curatorial endeavors are extensive and international in scope as well. Workshops, in particular, have been held China, Brazil, Guatemala, Russia, Finland, Norway, Germany, Switzerland, France, Spain, and Italy not to mention in America in Florida, California, Maine, New Mexico, Colorado, and North Carolina.
