About
In-Person Learning
The truly intimate portrait transcends being just another image, to become a unique, revealing statement about its subject and a timeless photograph.
In a career as a portrait, fashion, and advertising photographer over forty years long, Andrew Southam has established himself as one of the great creators of portraits that connect with their subject on a deeper level. In this one-day workshop, Andrew will take participants through his various methods for creating memorable, personal-feeling images that go far beyond skin deep.
We will begin with a consideration of the artists Andrew looks to for inspiration and discuss the importance of doing pre-session research. Each photographer will establish an intention for their work, and we then move onto the set where we will “break the ice” with specially considered conversations that serve to connect subject and photographer in real ways. There will be practical demonstrations of how Andrew works with his subjects to create a safe, supportive, and playful space where real creativity can happen. All along, Andrew will discuss how he makes decisions about lighting, mood, color versus black and white, energy and storytelling as he and the group creates new images.
Participants are encouraged to bring DSLR cameras equipped with a hot shoe or sync connection.
