This travel workshop will focus on taking unique, interesting portraits of people in their natural environments using Venice Beach, CA and Santa Monica Pier as our backdrops. After a Thursday afternoon meet-and-greet/orientation session, we will spend all day Friday, Saturday, and Sunday morning taking photographs. Known for its bohemian spirit, Venice Beach is the site of funky shops, street performers and colorful murals. This iconic site attracts visitors from all over the world and it is estimated that approximately 28,000 to 30,000 people visit the Venice Beach Boardwalk and adjacent Recreation and Parks property on a daily basis. Stretching over two miles and hosts hundreds of street vendors and performers along with numerous privately owned restaurants and food venues, Venice Beach also boasts numerous activities including but not limited to basketball, paddle tennis and handball tournaments, body building at the world famous Muscle Beach Venice gym. When it comes to environmental portraits, perhaps not other location in California boasts such an amazing opportunity for the photographer.

We’ll also spend time at nearby Santa Monica Pier, home of the iconic Pacific Park’s Ferris Wheel. The Pier offers more photographic opportunities with street performers, vendors, and a carnival atmosphere filled with possibilities. On Sunday, we finish our shooting adventure with a group review and critique of the work taken during the workshop.

October can be quite pleasant on Venice Beach. While may see daytime temperatures in the mid to high 80’s, temperatures can quickly cool to the low 60’s during the evening. Sunny skies are the norm along the west coast, but wind is common and can provide a chill at night.

Layered clothing is recommended to more easily adapt to the varying temperature we may encounter. Good outdoor walking shoes are required, and please bring a range of outdoor-worthy clothing that will keep you comfortable. Be sure to bring a good hat with wide brim, shades, and lots of sunscreen!

You are responsible for all your own meals/snacks during the trip. Anticipate breakfast and lunch on-the-go and optional group dinners.

We take the risk of COVID-19 very seriously. In order to ensure everyone safety, we follow C.D.C. guidelines and require that a face mask be worn during all indoor workshop activities and anytime you are within six feet of another person. Practically speaking, this means that masks will be required during our indoor sessions on the first day and last day, and when in the field, we will advise you of appropriate safety measures given the nature of the place, the nature of the activity, and the prevailing conditions. If you wish to enjoy mask-free shooting or walking, we urge that you maintain a safe distance from fellow participants and any other location visitors. As we sometimes gather around in the field for various purposes, we ask that you have a mask with you during all field sessions and that you wear it when instructed. For your ultimate protection, we recommend that you carry your own hand-sanitizer and/or virus safety kit and keep it with you at all times.
