About

London is a city of grandeur, history, and nuance. It is also considered to be the world’s largest urban forest with 8.3 million trees. This workshop will touch upon these themes with daily excursions to notable sites such as Parliament Square, Highgate Cemetery, and the Chelsea Physic Garden which was established in 1673 and is the only botanic garden with a plant collection focused entirely on medicinal, herbal, and useful plants. The workshop will include group photo walks and mini assignments, with the aim of offering an opportunity to rekindle photo techniques and cultivate new ones. Additionally, a private visit to the Royal Geographical Society will be arranged for participants to view vintage photographs from their vast collection.

Having time to just meander as a pedestrian and taking time, not just to look but to really see London at a human pace, is the aim of this workshop – to consider the light and colors, to look up and see architectural details on buildings, to stop and appreciate beauty and wonder, and to make photographs that reflect this experience. It is also an opportunity to learn more about a ‘place’ – a park, a street, a neighborhood, and history, such as the juxtaposition of a Roman-era wall set against a gleaming modern office building or a newly planted English Elm sapling standing next to a 700-year-old church. Marissa Roth will accompany the participants on all excursions and offer technical and creative advice, while also giving background to the location.

NOTE: Entrance fee for an adult at the Physic Garden is £14.50 = $18:00.
