Joaquin Palting is a contemporary visual artist based in Los Angeles. He is known primarily for his conceptual photographic storytelling, which straddles the line between documentary and the constructed image. His work has been exhibited internationally, and his photographs have appeared in numerous publications including: The New Yorker, Rolling Stone, and The New York Times. Joaquin is currently a M.F.A. Candidate at the University of California, Irvine.

LACP Interviews Joaquin Palting

LACP asks Joaquin Palting ten questions about his background, career in and beliefs about photography.

Los Angeles Center of Photography: What kind of photographer are you?

Joaquin Palting: I am an artist who has a photography based practice.

LACP: How long have you been photographing?

JP: Twenty two years.

LACP Where did you get your training?

JP: I was taught most everything I know by my mother, who taught photography at college. Other things I learned on the job working as an advertising and editorial photographer here in Los Angeles over the past 22 years.

LACP When did you know you wanted to devote your life to photography?

JP: The moment when I finally got the vision of what I saw with my eyes to appear in the photography that I was taking.

LACP: Did you ever come close to giving up?

JP: Many times…there is never a moment where you feel like your “made it” as a photographer, at least I have never experienced that. There have been times where I have been so frustrated that I was ready to throw all of my camera gear into the ocean, and never think about taking another picture.

LACP: Have you sacrificed anything by being a photographer?

JP: In hindsight I may have sacrificed a couple of personal relationships because of the demands of working as a photographer.

LACP: What have you gained by being a photographer?

JP: A better understanding of the world around me and my relationship to it. Photography allows me to view the world in a very objective manner.

LACP: What classes do you teach at LACP?

JP: Basic Photography.

LACP: What do you love most about teaching?

JP: Creating a photograph is a magical process and I love watching students get excited about learning the craft.

LACP: What advice would you give someone who is thinking about making a career in photography?

JP: Tenacity will be your most valuable ally.
