About

In-Person Learning

Building on the foundation established in Introduction to Studio Lighting, this six-session workshop will empower students to take their lighting skills to the next level. In this hands-on class, participants will move beyond basic setups to explore creative lighting design, working with advanced techniques and specialized equipment to shape mood, drama, and atmosphere in their imagery.

The workshop kicks off with a brief review, followed by five studio sessions focused on portraiture, fashion, and still life. Students will work with a variety of lighting tools, including tungsten and Kino Flo lights, while mastering complex multi-light setups. Through lectures and demonstrations, you will learn how to modify and control light to reveal texture, create separation, direct focus, and enhance the emotional tone of your shots.

As students refine their lighting techniques, they will develop their own unique style, experimenting with ways to control light’s quality and direction to tell deeper, more compelling stories. The course culminates in a three-hour location session where students will incorporate both natural and artificial light, bridging studio techniques with real-world application in dynamic environments. By the end of the workshop, students will leave with a refined understanding of lighting and the ability to create cinematic, high-impact imagery.

This course is a continuation of LACP’s signature Introduction to Studio Lighting workshop. It is an intermediate level class and therefore prior knowledge of lighting and equipment is required.  Students are encouraged to bring a Digital Single Lens Reflex (DSLR) or Mirrorless camera equipped with a hot shoe or sync connection.

Hugh Kretschmer set his sights on a career in photography at the age of 13, when his father taught him how to print his very first photograph in the family darkroom. Since then, he has never looked back, receiving a BFA from Art Center College of Design, and launching his career as a photo-illustrator in the editorial and advertising arenas. His fanciful yet provocative photographs balance between art and commerce, and have brought him critical acclaim through numerous national and international awards, and have been the subject of many articles and industry blog posts, most recently in Juxtapoz and Huffington Post, Italy. His work is now represented by Fathom Gallery in Los Angeles and Fotografenwerk, Dusseldorf, while on the commercial side has garnered him a long client list that includes Old Spice, Huggies, Honda, Toyota, Kohler, Evian, New York Times Magazine, Time, Vanity Fair, and Oprah Magazine. Kretschmer is currently an adjunct professor and part-time instructor at both Santa Monica College and UCLA.
