About
Online Learning
A compelling photobook is more than a collection of photographs—it is an experience shaped by rhythm, relationships, pacing, and the ideas that emerge when images are brought together. But how do you move from a strong body of work to a book with its own visual language, narrative, and sense of purpose.
In this four-session online workshop with photographer and educator Tim Carpenter, participants will explore a range of approaches to editing, sequencing, and structuring a photobook. Through presentations, close readings of published books, practical exercises, and group discussions of work-in-progress, we will consider how the order of images, the interplay of visual and conceptual connections, and the use of repetition, interruption, and pacing can shape a reader’s experience.
Rather than prescribing a single method, the workshop offers tools and strategies for discovering the form that best serves each individual project. Participants will be encouraged to question their assumptions, experiment with alternative sequences, and develop a clearer understanding of the relationship between their photographs and the book they are producing.
Participants should arrive at the first session with an early-draft PDF of their project, edited and sequenced for group discussion.
