Amari Dixon is a Northern California native who was born into a military family and raised in England during her early childhood. Her eclectic style and eye behind the camera are certainly a product of her broad cultural experiences. Growing up on the streets of Southside Chicago colored her world and opened her mind to find beauty in everyone and on every corner within the city. The magic of Amari behind the camera is that she helps you see beauty and truth in flaws and the weight of the human spirit. Photography has allowed Amari to converse and learn about people in such an intimate way and capture stories and truths that can be shared with the world.

The Work
This past summer, I was able to document the organization Intrsxtn Surf which was founded by Jessa Williams. Intrsxtn Surf is a collective in Los Angeles that creates a safe space for Black Women and WOC that surf. For me, the representation of women of color taking up space and shutting down stereotypes about what we don’t, can’t, or shouldn’t do is very important. Through this series I’m creating, and continuing to build, I’m able to see women freely embrace the ocean without worry, and find or rekindle joy and love for the water. This experience has been very personal. Documenting this space of joy and freedom deepens my love for the water as well.
