From childhood, I’ve had an obsessive fear of the unknown. Yet despite this, I remain inexplicably drawn to the dark alleys and the shadowy streets of anonymous cities. This curiosity is rooted in my need to discover what lies beneath the surface, unseen. This body of work explores isolated fragments from subjects once there but now gone, as a means of shining light on what is hidden, if only for an instant.
Daniel Sackheim is an American Film & Television director and producer best known for his work on such highly acclaimed series as HBO’s True Detective Season 3, Game of Thrones, and Amazon’s Jack Ryan. He received a 2017 Emmy nomination for Directing the Ozark episode Tonight We Improvise, which is a category he won in ‘94 for an episode of NYPD Blue. Some of Dan’s other Directorial credits include M. Night Shymalan’s Apple TV+ series Servant, Better Call Saul, The Leftovers, The Man in the High Castle, as well as multiple episodes of Ozark, The Walking Dead and HBO’s critically acclaimed Lovecraft Country.
In addition to his television work, Dan directed the Sony feature film The Glass House, starring Leelee Sobieski, Diane Lane, and Stellan Skarsgard, and produced The X-Files: Fight the Future for 20th Century Fox. He is a co-founder along with fellow HBO alum Tony To (Earth to the Moon, Band of Brothers, The Pacific) in the recently launched Bedrock Entertainment, which produces prestige content programming Streamers and premium cable platforms.
Dan’s photography which occupies a space dominated by shadows endeavors to explore an Urban Narrative. This attraction to the dark and ambiguous stems from his love of Film Noir and the heightened reality embodied by this filmic language.
