About

In-Person Learning

Most photographers can quickly grasp the technical fundamentals of portraiture—lighting, focus, exposure, focal length, and background. But far fewer succeed in transforming their images into deeply human, emotionally resonant experiences. That’s what sets a truly great portrait apart.

In this full-day workshop, veteran editorial, advertising, and music photographer Andrew Southam guides participants beyond technique into the heart of portrait photography: genuine connection. Through discussion, presentation, demonstration, and hands-on practice—both physical and interpersonal—attendees will explore new artistic and personal territory.

Whether you’re a seasoned professional, passionate hobbyist, or someone who simply enjoys capturing moments on your phone, this workshop offers a unique opportunity to grow—not just as a photographer, but as a person.

Andrew Southam is an Australian portrait and fashion photographer and director based in Los Angeles. He has lived and worked in New York, London, and Milan. He began his career creating photography for the Sydney Theatre Company and the Australian National Ballet. His work has been published in the Australian, English, Italian and American Vogue as well as American and French Elle, Rolling Stone, Vanity Fair, Glamour, Self, GQ, The New York Times Magazine, and Esquire. His images have been awarded by the Society of Publication Designer and exhibited in the Australian National Portrait Gallery. Some of his notable portrait subjects have been Natalie Portman, Gwyneth Paltrow, Uma Thurman, Liv Tyler, Benicio Del Toro, and Jodi Foster.
