About
Hybrid Learning
Street photography is about capturing real life as it unfolds—unfiltered, unscripted, and full of character. In this special edition of Introduction to Street Photography, acclaimed photographer Dotan Saguy brings his signature approach to one of the most iconic and visually rich locations in Los Angeles: Venice Beach.
From its legendary skate park and bustling basketball courts to the handball walls and the grooving roller rink, Venice Beach is a living theater of subcultures and spontaneous moments. You’ll document the energy of the drum circle, explore creative compositions around freestyle athletes, and learn how to spot—and engage with—the unforgettable characters of the boardwalk.
The course blends online instruction—covering the history of street photography, legal and ethical best practices, and inspiring works from the masters—with in-person field sessions that take full advantage of Venice Beach’s vibrant chaos. You’ll receive personalized, hands-on guidance from Dotan as you develop your eye for timing, gesture, and emotion in the streets.
By the end of the course, you’ll have built confidence in your street photography, expanded your portfolio with dynamic images from Venice Beach, and sharpened the observational skills essential to this genre.
Dotan Saguy was born in a small Israeli kibbutz, grew-up in a diverse working class Parisian suburb and emigrated to the United States at the age of 25. In 2015 Dotan decided to leave his successful high-tech career to focus on his lifelong passion for photography. He then attended the prestigious Eddie Adams Workshop, Missouri Photo Workshop, studied photojournalism at Santa Monica College, and quickly garnered awards and recognition in the field. Dotan’s photographs have been published by National Geographic, The Guardian, the Los Angeles Times and many others. He has been leading street photography and documentary workshops for the Leica Akademie, Momenta Workshops, and has started Storyteller Workshops in partnership with Gail Fisher, a distinguished photographer and editor from National Geographic and the LA Times. To date Dotan has published three monographs with the famed German publisher Kehrer Verlag: “Venice Beach, the Last Days of a Bohemian Paradise” (2018), “Nowhere to Go but Everywhere” (2020) and “DOGTOWN, the Pups of Venice Beach and their Humans” (2024). Dotan lives in West Los Angeles with his wife, Abigail and their dog, Beau.
