Once the gateway for Jewish and Japanese immigrants, today it is a vibrant mosaic of Latino heritage, street art, and community activism.

Explore the heart of Los Angeles’ Eastside with our April meet-up class in Boyle Heights, a dynamic neighborhood known for its deep cultural roots and rich history. Once the gateway for Jewish and Japanese immigrants, today it is a vibrant mosaic of Latino heritage, street art, and community activism. From the murals of the iconic 1st Street to the historic Mariachi Plaza, Boyle Heights offers a fascinating blend of tradition and transformation. Students will have the opportunity to capture the neighborhood’s bold visual identity—whether it’s the lively community gatherings, the colorful art that adorns the streets, or the juxtaposition of old-school storefronts with modern-day energy. This class is perfect for those looking to tell powerful visual stories about culture, resilience, and the evolving spirit of LA’s Eastside.
This engaging exploration of Los Angeles is part of LACP’s Meet-Up in LA series of classes, designed for visual storytellers of all levels. Each class includes an in-person excursion to a unique and vibrant area of the city, followed by an online Zoom session for critique and reflection on the work created. Students will develop their photography skills while capturing the eclectic essence of LA, with a focus on narrative and composition. Participants should be familiar with their cameras (digital cameras are strongly encouraged).
The location for this meet-up will be Boyle Heights.
Thomas Alleman is a commercial, editorial and fine art photographer living and working in Los Angeles. During a 15 year newspaper career, Tom was a frequent winner of distinctions from the National Press Photographer’s Association, as well as being named California Newspaper Photographer of the Year in 1995 and Los Angeles Newspaper Photographer of the Year in 1996. As a magazine freelancer, his pictures have been published regularly in Time, People, Business Week, Barrons, Smithsonian National Geographic Traveler, and US News & World Report, and have also appeared in Brandweek, Sunset, Harper’s and Travel Holiday.
