Join photographer Dotan Saguy for a vibrant photography adventure on Venice Beach, where the eclectic energy and stunning coastal scenery provide a rich canvas for creativity. From the colorful boardwalk and street performers to the tranquil waves and iconic sunsets, Dotan will guide participants with technical insights and creative suggestions, ensuring you capture the essence of this unique location. 

The dates in June were chosen specifically over the solstice weekend, with an atmosphere that is sure to be quite electric and marked with lively, special events. With years of experience photographing boardwalk, Dotan is ideally positioned to share the techniques he’s developed while shooting his three published monographs documenting the various sub-cultures of Venice Beach. Participants will be split into groups of two-three people with Dotan spending equal time between groups. 

A few days later, we’ll reconvene online via Zoom for a two-hour critique session, where you can share your work and receive valuable feedback. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced photographer, this class is an excellent opportunity to explore the dynamic charm of Venice Beach and enhance your skills in a supportive environment. 

This engaging exploration of Los Angeles is part of LACP’s Meet-Up in LA series of classes, designed for visual storytellers of all levels. Each class includes an in-person excursion to a unique and vibrant area of the city, followed by an online Zoom session for critique and reflection on the work created. Students will develop their photography skills while capturing the eclectic essence of LA, with a focus on narrative and composition. Participants should be familiar with their cameras (digital cameras are strongly encouraged).

The location for this meet-up will be Venice Beach.

Dotan Saguy was born in a small Israeli kibbutz, grew-up in a diverse working class Parisian suburb and emigrated to the United States at the age of 25. In 2015 Dotan decided to leave his successful high-tech career to focus on his lifelong passion for photography. He then attended the prestigious Eddie Adams Workshop, Missouri Photo Workshop, studied photojournalism at Santa Monica College, and quickly garnered awards and recognition in the field. Dotan’s photographs have been published by National Geographic, The Guardian, the Los Angeles Times and many others. He has been leading street photography and documentary workshops for the Leica Akademie, Momenta Workshops, and has started Storyteller Workshops in partnership with Gail Fisher, a distinguished photographer and editor from National Geographic and the LA Times. To date Dotan has published three monographs with the famed German publisher Kehrer Verlag: “Venice Beach, the Last Days of a Bohemian Paradise” (2018), “Nowhere to Go but Everywhere” (2020) and “DOGTOWN, the Pups of Venice Beach and their Humans” (2024). Dotan lives in West Los Angeles with his wife, Abigail and their dog, Beau.
