About
In-Person Learning
How can sustained attention to one neighborhood, street, community, or visual theme reveal a deeper story about Los Angeles?
In this intensive three-day workshop, participants will create a cohesive body of work through daily shooting assignments, lectures, group discussions, and image reviews. Working in a shared Los Angeles location—or following a collectively chosen theme—students will explore the relationship between candid street photography, environmental portraiture, and landscape or sense-of-place imagery.
The workshop emphasizes curiosity, observation, and connection. Students will learn how to move beyond isolated “good pictures” and develop a visual narrative that reflects the people, atmosphere, and details of a place. Each participant will photograph daily, return for midday meetings and feedback, and refine their approach as the project develops.
Field shooting will be scheduled primarily during the early morning and late afternoon, when the quality of light is often most expressive and when public spaces can reveal distinct rhythms of activity. Participants whose individual subjects, access, schedules, or story ideas require photographing at other times of day may work in the field outside of these designated shooting periods.
The workshop is appropriate for photographers who want to strengthen their documentary, street, portrait, and visual storytelling skills while developing a short, cohesive project. Participants should bring a camera they are comfortable using and be prepared to photograph on foot.
Learning Objectives:
By the end of the workshop, participants will:
- Develop a focused photographic project centered on a shared place or theme.
- Practice candid street photography with attention to gesture, timing, composition, and atmosphere.
- Create environmental portraits that connect a subject’s personal story with their surroundings.
- Make landscape and detail photographs that establish a strong sense of place.
- Learn editing and sequencing strategies for building a concise visual narrative.
- Receive constructive feedback through daily group discussions and image reviews.
