In-Person Learning
This expanded six-session workshop offers a comprehensive introduction to portrait lighting in a professional studio setting. Ideal for photographers ready to deepen their skills, the course blends technical instruction with creative exploration, allowing students time to fully absorb and apply what they learn.
Through live demonstrations, discussion, and hands-on shooting, students will examine the principles of light quality, including how to shape, soften, and control light using modifiers such as soft-boxes, beauty dishes, umbrellas, and grids. We’ll explore lighting techniques for various skin tones, eyes, and hair, and discuss how light affects mood, dimension, and texture in a portrait.
The class will also explore the emotional side of portraiture—how composition, styling, and connection to the subject contribute to compelling images. Students will practice with live models across multiple sessions, gaining confidence with both equipment and creative direction.
All gear is provided. Just bring your camera and your curiosity.
F. Scott Schafer is an American Photographer based in Los Angeles. An honoree graduate of Art Center College of Design, his stylized brand of portraiture has captured the essence of prominent personalities and entertainers for the past 25 years. Scott’s award-winning iconic images, which embody a unique style of concept, humor and lighting, have been produced for such clients as Intel, HBO, Showtime, Aflac, Sonos, Yahoo!, Netflix and Pepsi to name a few. He has most recently photographed President Barack Obama, Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook, gold medalist Michael Phelps, tennis champion Serena Williams, super bowl MVP Tom Brady and basketball star Lebron James.

- Skill/Experience Level: Students should have a working knowledge of their camera are encouraged to bring a Digital Single Lens Reflex (DSLR) or Mirrorless camera equipped with a hot shoe or sync connection.
