About
In-Person Learning
This workshop is a chance to share, pick apart and rethink a body of work that you are already immersed in. Over the course of three days, we will dig into what drives you, experiment with editing and sequencing, and discuss how to push your work further. We will take a critical approach, with the goal of leading you into new territory conceptually and/or emotionally. We embrace work that is collaborative and that aspires to challenge conventions.
Carolyn will also share her practical experiences working in various facets of the photography world, including book publishing, exhibitions, commercial jobs and editorial work. Special attention will be given to photo book publishing. We will dissect a selection of books and talk through what makes them work, and Carolyn will elaborate on the decisions and collaborations that were crucial in making her own books, from the highlights and disasters of self-publishing to the benefits and challenges of working with established publishers.
Carolyn Drake works on long term photo-based projects seeking to interrogate dominant historical narratives and creatively reimagine them. Her practice embraces collaboration and has in recent years melded photography with sewing, collage, and sculpture. She is interested in collapsing the traditional divide between author and subject, the real and the imaginary, challenging entrenched binaries. “Men Untitled,” her latest photographic series presented at the Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson at the end of 2023, explores her relationship with the ideals of masculinity in American culture. She has received numerous awards including a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Peter S Reed Foundation, the Lange Taylor Prize and the HCB Foundation Award. She is represented by Yancey Richardson Gallery and Magnum Photos.
