Do you have a photographer’s eye that singles out many moments often unnoticed by others? In our ever-changing landscape there are so many of these instances that can be captured if you have the knowing, planning and expertise. Deemed “Street Photography”, this art-form goes beyond the snapshot into the artistic documentation of today’s urban realities by harnessing emotion, light, shadows and storytelling in a single image.

“Street Portraiture” builds on this art style where the photographer capitalizes on the raw beauty of the unposed subject creating a natural, unencumbered photograph. Technically the photographer is forced to move from the shadows to directly engage the subject transitioning from a former candid creation to a deliberate portrait.

In this one-week class, join filmmaker and photographer Todd Felderstein as together we will discover the secrets in “Street Portraiture” that will hone our storytelling skills, allowing us to better discover hidden gems and how to approach and engage random subjects without disrupting their environment. This class will further address composition, lighting, cameras and the psychology behind this style of shooting. We will create an assortment of portraits on a weekly basis while always challenging our comfort zone and creative eye. The course will conclude with a final project to be presented to the entire class.

Having completed this class, students will walk away with a more refined photographer’s eye, a greater technical understanding, and a greater sense of confidence when venturing out with their camera, regardless of the surrounding culture and community.

NOTE: Since “Street Portraiture” oftentimes needs to be somewhat intimate, students should be prepared to be pushed outside of their comfort zone.

This course will include multiple field trip excursions within the surrounding area. Students should wear comfortable shoes and expect to walk up to two or three miles for each excursion.

A Digital Single Lens Reflex (DSLR) camera or digital mirrorless camera capable of manual control settings is highly recommended for this class. However, all types of cameras are welcome, including film cameras.

Born in Rochester, NY, the home of Eastman Kodak, Todd Felderstein claims that with these roots he was destined for a career in photography and the visual arts. First introduced to the camera at a very young age via the Pentax Spotmatic, Todd continues to shoot professionally (with current equipment!) in tandem with his career as a director in film & theatre. Early successes include the “Anti-Smoking” media campaign for the City of Los Angeles’ that was featured in print and on billboards throughout Southern California and a series on martial artists that was published by Blackbelt Magazine. Clients through the years include PR and advertising agencies, Mattel, the Los Angeles Times and many others. Today, Todd likes to focus his lens on portraits, musicians, commercial and ‘street’ photography, a close relative to his work in documentary filmmaking. Todd also has a wide array of music videos, documentaries, short and long-form motion productions and was recently a finalist in the “Emerging Filmmaker Program” at the Cannes Film Festival. Todd has taught youth programs in photography and filmmaking all over the country, established the youth documentary program at the San Pedro Int. Film Festival, and is the former executive director of The Story Project, a nonprofit whose mission furthers communication skills in at-risk teens through a curriculum rooted in the media arts.
