About
In-Person Learning
Anderson & Low will demonstrate strategies to broaden creative thinking, enabling students to re-examine their own projects. Reference will be made to possibilities, techniques and approaches in all visual art but of course including photography. Anderson & Low will demonstrate their ideas partly using their own work but will also use many other photographers and visual artists as well. They will demonstrate some of the myriad ways that narrative threads can be explored and used, not only for individual images but also for an entire project. Overt, oblique, and implied narratives will be reviewed and discussed with references from the entire history of photography as well as other visual art forms.
Topics will include (among others) intentional photography, visual triggers, aesthetics and color vs. black & white, symbolism, modernism and abstraction, thinking outside the box, and how to break the rules. In addition to reviewing different kinds of narratives, Anderson & Low will also discuss how viewer perception affects images, image construction and how this can be used. They will also discuss project design – including stylistic choices for images, for exhibitions and for books.
Anderson & Low actively encourage attendees to bring their own projects and images for discussion. They aim to encourage students to think about their works in new ways and hope to demonstrate creative possibilities that were not previously being explored or considered.
NOTE: Some images presented in this course contain nudity, images relating to sexuality and subjects relating explicitly to death. Please do not attend if any of these topics will offend you.
During their collaboration of over 35 years, Anderson & Low (Jonathan Anderson & Edwin Low) have created numerous projects. Their work includes portraiture, architectural studies, nudes, reportage, and abstraction. Their photography is noted for attention to concept, narrative, form, lighting, and printing.
They are well known for their projects looking at the process of sports, examining what it takes to be an athlete, and using this as a window onto the human condition. They are also noted for questioning the boundaries between photography and other visual arts, and for blurring the lines between fantasy and reality in their projects.
Their work is included in many collections, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Victoria & Albert Museum, London; National Portrait Galleries of both the UK and Australia; Museum of Fine Art, Houston; Cleveland Museum of Art; National Gallery of Australia, Canberra; and Maison Européenne de la Photographie, Paris.
Anderson & Low were official artists for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, with an exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery. Their work was exhibited in the official 2011 Venice Biennale. They have created images relating to both Star Wars and recent James Bond films. Anderson & Low are Honorary Fellowship recipients of the Royal Photographic Society in recognition of their contribution to photography. They are Artists in Residence at Birmingham School of Art, UK.
