About
Hybrid Learning
Timeline is a real-time exploration of our changing world through the photographic lens—a living, evolving archive built by documentarians, photojournalists, and street photographers capturing what is happening right now in the places they call home, documenting a nation in flux and creating a visual record for next generations.
Cohort – Portland, OR with Joni Kabana
The Portland, Oregon cohort of Timeline, led by artist and educator Joni Kabana, invites photographers to engage with a city shaped by environmental consciousness, social movements, and deeply rooted local communities. Participants will document Portland’s evolving cultural and political landscape, creating real-time images that reflect both resilience and uncertainty in a region known for questioning systems and imagining alternatives. Under Kabana’s guidance, the cohort will develop a nuanced body of work that honors lived experience and place—contributing a vital perspective to the national Timeline archive and expanding the visual conversation around a city in continual negotiation with its identity.
Joni Kabana is a visual artist who is most happy when she is deep into a world which is unfamiliar to her. Her body of work spans continents and cultures with a primary focus on portraiture. Her belief is that our best portraits come if we “photograph thoughts, not faces” and her approach focuses on the psychology, both with the subject and the photographer, that arises when attempting to capture the essence of a person. Joni teaches for several institutions and organizes her own portraiture and international photography workshops. Street portraiture is her signature teaching area, helping many overcome fear of approaching random subjects in addition to “crossing cultural divides” by enabling photographers (new to the craft or experienced) to create authentic portrayals of brief or in-depth encounters. You can find Joni roaming backroads afar from home or making pictures in Eastern Oregon where she nestles in an isolated cabin.
