About
On August 18, 1920, the 19th amendment, guaranteeing women’s right to vote, became the law of the land. As this year’s members show will coincide with the anniversary of that momentous occasion, this call invites submissions for works that consider the struggles and victories we share in our communities, and our collective strength when we come together.
Reflecting on those histories and regarding our current moment in time, when technology is being used to keep us divided and isolated, and as social media deepens our loneliness and alienation from one another, this call imagines a space for us to come together to celebrate and honor what connects us through photography.

Juror's Statement
This exhibition coincides with the 105th anniversary of the 19th amendment—that gave US women the right to vote. This hard-won amendment, and its current vulnerability, reminds us of the importance of individual, and collective struggle for empowerment, and the significance of all voices being heard.
Inspired by this sentiment, Fearless recognizes artists who create distinctive photographic narratives and varying points of view that need to be heard, while using aesthetics to engage with issues and connect to audiences.
Fearless is the absence of fear, in the face of a daunting challenge or danger. When expressed photographically, there is an innate luxury of hindsight, to ponder, reflect, and consider what the photograph will say through its visual language.
Standout photographs that express fearlessness in unexpected, nuanced ways included an old family photograph that became source material for a piece about familial bonds and lineage; piercing the photograph with thread suggests personal and political struggles passed down the generations. Fear and fearlessness are subtly intertwined in a labor-intensive light-painted portrait—inspired by the 1992 Rodney King verdict, and its subsequent aftermath—with the physicality of the artist’ process evident. A visual clue, in the form of a hearing device, transforms a portrait into a statement on the differentness and cultural identity of navigating life with a new perception of vision, sound, and silence; the result of the artist being late-deafened, is fearless in embracing uniqueness.
