About

Disruption in photographic arts started long before artificial intelligence upended the contemporary visual landscape. Artists such as Hannah Höch, John Heartfield and Man Ray used collage in their work during the first decades of the twentieth century as a way to negotiate their own vision and shock their viewers, reflecting the world, its conflicted realities, and political dynamics by assembling, montaging and refracting images.

Bringing those ideas to the twenty-first century, Staring at the Cloud: Collage Between Analog and Digital considers the histories, present and future of photographic collages at this moment. Inspired by LACP’s home in Downtown LA, nestled between the Toy District and Little Tokyo, this exhibition is interested both in the tactile playfulness of manipulating images, and the ways in which the gestures of cutting and pasting highlight power relations in civic spaces and private lives.

Juror Statement

“The camera can’t see space. It sees surfaces. People see space, which is much more interesting.” – David Hockney

I often thought of David Hockney during the selection process. Collage, alongside the Post-Surrealists, became a significant means of expression in photography during the Pop Art era. The artist behind “Polaroid Cloud” uses this “invisibility” of photography within the collage to convey the zeitgeist of this flood of images. Their work captures the theme both metaphorically and figuratively.

The second-place piece plays with our imagination. The artist transports us into a world of science fiction, revealing things we never believed could exist. With exceptional mastery in the darkroom, they use the lens to mirror  into the soul.

The third-place artist draws upon words and images that left an impression on them, creating new and unique stories. Photography continually reinvents itself through such works.

I extend my congratulations to all 14 artists who made it into the selection.
