Artist Statement
The Geography of Memory
These photographs trace the geography of my youth in San Francisco. During those years I was a street kid, and the city became both my refuge and my teacher. They are less a history of the city than a map of the places that shaped me: the clubs where we found our community, the late-night streets where we kept the conversation going, the skateparks and shoreline where we escaped, the losses that followed, and the young voices who now inherit those same streets. Im shooting the present through the lens of memory.
Art became my way out of that street life, and I threw myself into it. I got 2 BFAs and was accepted into an MFA program before life took me in another direction. To support my son, I became a psychotherapist, spending twenty-five years working with teenagers who often reminded me of who I had once been. Now, newly retired, I have returned to photography. Timeline is both a return and a continuation, an attempt to reconnect with the places that shaped me and to see what they have become.
