About
Hybrid Learning (In-Person and Online)
Join renowned photographer Nancy Kaye in this immersive street photography class, where you’ll explore the vibrant streets of Los Angeles through the art of visual storytelling. Over six sessions, students will build their technical skills and develop a personal approach to capturing candid moments on the streets of Hollywood, Downtown LA, and more.
This hands-on workshop covers essential topics such as mastering the exposure triangle, using camera modes for street settings, and recognizing the interplay of light and shadow. Emphasis will be placed on developing a street photography mindset—anticipating decisive moments, composing on the fly, and photographing people and places with respect and creativity. Through group discussions, live shooting sessions, and critiques, students will learn to trust their instincts and use their camera as a tool for deeper observation.
By the end of the course, students will have gained confidence in their ability to photograph in dynamic urban environments and will walk away with a portfolio that tells unique visual stories of everyday life.
Nancy Kaye is an LA photographer, educator, and curator, previously based in New York and London. Her background is photojournalism, having worked for The Washington Post, The New York Times, and AP. She currently focuses on sociologically-driven and fine art projects.
Her photos are widely exhibited in juried shows and included in numerous books and documentaries. Her portrait of author Ralph Ellison is in the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture. She was honored with inclusion in Your Daily Photograph’s Hot 100 of 2021, 100 photographers selected out of 4,500 by collectors and curators, through LA’s Duncan Miller Gallery.
Nancy teaches at LA Valley College and LA City College, leads street photo workshops, and guides photographers in personal projects. She was interviewed for Street Photography Magazine’s February podcast.
Among group exhibitions she’s curated are With Water/Without Water at Photoville LA; Capture This Moment, ten online exhibitions documenting the pandemic for American Jewish University’s Whizin Center; A World at Home, depicting the pandemic’s early days; and 2022: A Year of Duality, a 2023 print exhibit.
She’s currently president of the LA chapter of American Society of Media Photographers (ASMP.)
