LACP Interviews Seth Greenberg

LACP asks Seth Greenberg ten questions about their background, career in and beliefs about photography.

Los Angeles Center of Photography: What kind of photographer are you?

Seth Greenberg: I am primarily a sports action photographer and sports photo editor.

LACP: How long have you been photographing?

SG: I have been taking pictures professionally for 20 years.

LACP: Where did you get your training?

SG: My primary photo education was at ICP in New York City.

LACP: When did you know you wanted to devote your life to photography?

SG: I have wanted to be a photographer from the age of 10. It was then that I started collecting Sports Illustrated and I would get lost for hours looking at the photography page by page.

LACP: Did you ever come close to giving up?

SG: Along the way I have worked in photography jobs that took me away from creating my own images for long stretches of time, but I have never wanted to give up.

LACP: Have you sacrificed anything by being a photographer?

SG: I have sacrificed things to be a photographer, but I have gained so much more. On the sacrificed side I think both financial security and rest come to mind.

LACP: What have you gained by being a photographer?

SG: I have gained so much by the creative pursuit of photography. Travel and working remotely, the ability to look at things critically, the freedom to tell stories visually. It can be seen from the other prespectives – that these are the things that bought me to photography.

LACP: What classes do you teach at LACP?

SG: I teach sports “meet-ups” So far one planned on the LA Marathon and on UCLA and USC tail-gaiting.

LACP: What do you love most about teaching?

SG:  It is very rewarding to me to connect with other people who like to tell stories with a camera, and I encourage them to show the world through their eyes. Everyone sees the world differently and this is perhaps what I love most about photography is that we get a little glimpse into how other people see the world.

LACP: What advice would you give someone who is thinking about making a career in photography?

SG: Don’t over-complicate your decision. Decide on a story to tell or a type of photography to pursue and take as many pictures as possible in that theme to see if you like doing it.  If the story is compelling and well executed, then it’s time to show the world.
