About

The American Psychology Association (APA) describes eco-anxiety as “the chronic fear of environmental cataclysm that comes from observing the seemingly irrevocable impact of climate change and the associated concern for one’s future and that of next generations.” Between guilt about our carbon footprint and varying degrees of existential dread, we all grapple with the short- and long-term effects of climate change and our relationships with nature.

Project Exhibition: Eco Anxiety and Photography Now explores projects that observe our complicated relationships with nature, as well as the shifts and transformations the natural world is undergoing as a result of climate disasters and calamities.

The Juror

Victoria Gerard is a proven leader with over 17 years of experience in museum management, operations, program and exhibition development, and research. Her expertise is supported by an in-depth understanding of marketing, brand management, development, administration and finance gained through progressive work experience and academic success. She currently serves as Deputy Director at the Laguna Art Museum where she is working to reactivate and transform California’s oldest museum post-pandemic.

Throughout her career Victoria has organized a diverse schedule of special exhibitions by establishing partnerships with museums and organizations around the world, overseen work related to museums’ permanent collections, and built partnerships with parents, schools, and adult service organizations to offer a range of virtual and onsite learning opportunities that expanded the cultural knowledge and understanding of people of all ages while also responding to critical community needs. She is most proud of the fact that her leadership supported the Bowers Museum through the COVID-19 pandemic as she built a virtual museum from the ground up. Her hobbies include traveling the world, reading novels, giggling over life’s discoveries with her kiddo, and experimenting with gluten free and allergy friendly cuisine.

Juror Statement

I would like to extend my sincere thanks to LACP Executive Director and Chief Curator Rotem Rozental for the invitation to jury this meaningful and important exhibition. Thanks to Brandon Gannon, Director of Operations & Director of Education for making it all possible and to Matthew Finley, Programs and Exhibition Manager for all of the support. A huge thanks as well to each and every artist who submitted work for my consideration. I enjoyed studying each and every photography you submitted as well as the challenge of selecting a handful of talented artists to highlight in the exhibition.

Eco Anxiety and Photography Now is such a relevant topic to explore via photography in so many ways. While we all live and see the same world, our perspectives are incredibly diverse. Ways of seeing have always fascinated me, especially when a photographer takes a familiar subject and creates a scenario where you can see something unexpected, unexplored and unconsidered. I brought this same perspective to jurying this exhibition. In Eco Anxiety and Photography Now, viewers will be confronted with relatable images that demand you take a closer look and reconsider their meaning. The goal is of course for viewers to ponder what each image means in terms of their own context and experience with the environment, but also to inspire a sense of wonder and hope in a treasure that we all have- the Earth. Artists can raise awareness and bring attention to subjects in a way that others simply cannot. I hope that as you view these photographs that you will be inspired to think, dream, reconsider and repair, all in service of creating hope and joy for the wonderous world that we are privileged to be a part of.
